Eighteen year old Alexei Lesukov won several titles this year in the body building competiotions in St.Petersburgh and Murmansk.
Rookie of the year - that's how the youngster was called at the North-East championships.

Willpower plus character
As a kid Lesha was a regular boy: took up swimming, learned to play the piano.
He didn't quiete enjoy the activity, but didn't want to argue with his mom over it...at least for now.

At 13 Lesha looked at himself in the mirror and decided that he'd look good as a bodybuilder. Read the necessary book and began going to the gym. That's where his strong character kicked in.
-Mother was against it, -says Lesha, -would even forbid me. I had to sneak out to go to the gym and pay for it out my school-food allowance.

-Who trained you ?

-Nobody. I would create my own programs. I'd workout by myself and then with a friend. In the 11th grade I began preparing to apply to the Lesgraft(?) Academy in St. Petersburgh.

Last year Aleksey travelled to Saint Petersburgh to apply to the university and ofcourse went to the nearest gym to workout. That's where he was noticed by his future trainer.

Number one amongst the juniors/teenagers (???)

Andrei Prokofiev a trainer at the "Almaz" (Diamond) fitness club, a winner of many top bodybuilding title's, observed Alexei for a while and then offered his guidance.
This is when Alexei - a freshman of the academy (a bodybuilding trainer-teacher in the future) started combining the studies with the daily 2 hour training sessions.
It was difficult, admits Lesha.

But by april Alexei was ready to his first contest. In a month he became an overal champion among juniors (teenagers?) at the North-East championships; Russia's overall champion at the Eastern Europe's Cup and won the first places among juniors(teens?) and men at the Saint Petersburgs championships. For which besides cups and medals he was awarded a title of "Master of the Sport" (Damn ! that's friggin good ! -a.s.)


This "Master of the Sport" does not drink, smoke, is attractive and in general a pretty nice catch !

As it turnes out, a success is not easy for bodybuilders. Contest is preceeded by two months of difficult prep: tough physical demands and special low carb diet.

A week before a shaw the ration of athletes consists of only proteins and no salt! And two days before the contest - carbohydrate load phase.
All of this is required, as Alexei explained, to make the muscles bigger, because that is what is judged in bodybuilding.

Prior to the contest the athletes weigh in, then "painted" - the skin is covered by a special cream (they love Dream Tan there
to give the body bronze-like color which makes muscles more visible.

While on stage the athletes show off several mandatory poses - jury judges different muscle groups and overall simmetry.
Then a free-posing routine - to the mosic. At the end - one minute of posing.
Only after all of that athletes find out how they placed.

Right now Alexei is resting and this fall will begin preparing for the next contest. highly likely that Apatitas will have their own European champion.
